Last week I began another class, this one is a continuing education course on homiletics, or preaching. The stated purpose of the class is to teach the students how to prepare and deliver a sermon without the use of notes or manuscript. To someone like me, this is indeed a scary thought! So far, we have met twice. Last Saturday, and this past Saturday. The big assignment for the class is to preach a sermon, without using notes or manuscript, and have it evaluated. Since I was scheduled to preach this past weekend, I chose to use that sermon, rather than to write another one.
Needless to say, this was somewhat nerve-wracking for me. All in all, however, I think things went quite well. I even had one man tell me that I do a better job without notes or manuscript, than with.
Right now, it looks as if the my next opportunity to preach will be in September.
